Hope and the Human Spirit: Overcoming Polio
Sponsored by Central Kansas Polio Survivors Support Group
Transcending Limitations Giving Wings to the Future
"Hope and the Human Spirit - Overcoming Polio" is the title of a year long exhibit established at the Reno County Museum in partnership with the Central Kansas Polio Survivors Support Group.
The exhibit traces polio from Egyptian times, through America's epidemic, the advent of the Salk and Sabine vaccines, to Post-Polio Syndrome and the current efforts to eradicate polio all over the globe.

Among the displays are a mannequin with authentically reproduced hot packs. This "Sister Kenny" method allowed muscles constricted by polio to relax and be manipulated by health care providers. Visitors will be able to view and hear the Emerson iron lung that saved many victims whose respiratory muscles were affected.
Thanks to Rotary International, March of Dimes, Polio Health International, Respironics Colorado Inc., Museum of Disability, Halstead Learning Center, and of course the survivors themselves.
The "Hope and the Human Spirit - Overcoming Polio"
exhibit is on display through March 15th, 2009
